CIMI Coding Class for Girls - Learning the Basics
June 9, 2021
Congratulations to 14 girls who completed Module 1 of CIMI Coding Class for girls! This spring these middle school girls learned the basic fundamental coding concepts and principles
Using the materials from Girls Who Code, this 10-week program was facilitated by Ivonne Figueroa for one hour on Mondays, March 18 - May 17, 2021. A few regular volunteers led the breakout room sessions where the girls did reading and activities that reinforced the learnings from the class.
Learning coding concepts like conditionals, functions, and algorithms (amongst others) may sound difficult and dry, but the sessions were fun and relatable! Here is a glimpse from one of the sessions:
Sandwich making Activity
Girls wrote instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. A volunteer setup his kitchen to make the sandwich. He followed the instructions from the girls as a robot would. What do you think happened?
The girls laughed as he made a mess by attempting to follow the instructions “literally” like a computer-operated robot would do.
The girls learned that computers don’t have the knowledge humans have, so it’s important to break down the instructions for coding. They also learned that computers are good at: (1) memory; (2) simple decision making; and (3) repeating.
Hello my name is Rosario and my daughter Fernanda is in the coding class. She just finished Module 1 and now she's starting Module 2. As a mother, I'm very glad for this opportunity and I promise that my daughter will always be on time in her classes and will do the work that the teachers give her. I know this is a difficult time that we are passing through, but with the support of good people like everyone who is part of CIMI we can get ahead of this difficult time.
Thank you to CIMI, Mrs. Ivonne, Josh and everyone who helped the girls in coding. From the bottom of our heart, thank you. - Leyva-Jimenez's Family
Hello Maestra Ivonne,
I’m very happy to finish Module one, and very excited to start Module two. During Module one I learned many new things. At the beginning it was confusing. We had to read a lot of information but you and the volunteer made the class easier by helping us
understand the concept of coding. The best part was when you introduced your pet dog Leche to us. It was fun when we had to write specific directions to the robot on how to make sandwiches. It was fun having a chance to give out our ideas in the breakout room, talking about how we can make different apps.
Thank you CIMI. Thank you Mrs. Ivonne. Thank you to the volunteers who gave us some of their time to share their knowledge with us. Thank you for everything. - Fernanda Leyva
Good morning, I want to thank Dr. Ivonne and the volunteers for their support and time in computer classes for my daughter Amy Sanchez. Thank you for the opportunity to continue participating in this program. - Janeth Garcia
Dear Dr. Ivonne, I am so thankful for you taking the time out of your day to teach us coding. I am very excited for this new module that we have started. These past weeks have been amazing. I have learned a lot of things that I did not know before. Because of you my brain will grow. Coding is something that I have been learning for a long time now, but this class will build my knowledge further. I am thankful to have this opportunity that not a lot of people have. I am looking forward to seeing what else I will learn in the future. I am also grateful for all the volunteers that helped without you this class would have not happened. I am very grateful for everything you have done. Sincerely, Perla Leon
We want to thank your entire team for the help that my daughter is receiving. She liked the program very much and she has learned a lot. Thank you Ivonne and the CIMI team. Especially to Aracely for always giving us the opportunity to get involved in these programs. I appreciate it very much. - Mariavillicana
After 10 weeks, the girls made a mockup of an online website and explored their creative side. Here is an example from that activity.
We are excited to continue our next hybrid module, where the girls will start applying the concepts learned from the first module in Scratch! The class will meet virtually for the first four weeks and the class will meet in-person in a bootcamp style summer camp over two Saturdays in July! Scratch and coding, here we come!
